A benchmark for AI code review
On 5 October 2026, GitHub introduced ReviewBench, an open benchmark using representative pull requests and consistent evaluation. It considers both detected issues and the accuracy of review findings.
Suggested evaluation on a real project
For business software, a useful review comment helps a developer resolve a specific problem in context. A team can test a tool against completed changes where engineers have already confirmed the defects and their fixes.
An internal evaluation can ask:
- Which business-logic and technical defects does the tool identify?
- Does each comment explain the location and conditions that trigger the issue?
- How many comments require investigation without leading to a useful change?
- Does the tool miss important requirements recorded in the specification?
- How does total engineer review time change?
A public benchmark provides a reference for evaluation methods. Fit for a particular project still needs to be checked against its code, conventions and requirements.
Combine AI review with quality controls
Define which findings require action and who has authority to approve release. Changes affecting access control, data or important business rules need review by someone who understands the system.
A practical starting point is to add AI comments to pull requests while retaining existing automated checks and acceptance procedures. After the trial, adjust usage based on useful defects found and time actually saved.
