A new way for agents to call established workflows
On 29 October 2026, AWS announced that AWS Step Functions workflows can be exposed to AI agents as tools through Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway. An agent can decide when to call a workflow and what input to pass; the state machine still runs the configured steps in their defined order. AWS says existing Standard and Express workflows can be used this way.
For businesses, this offers a way to connect AI to an established operating process without asking the agent to decide every step. A customer-support agent, for example, could start a refund workflow while the workflow handles eligibility checks, approval and transaction recording. Each use still requires an appropriately configured gateway and access permissions.
The opportunity comes with control requirements
This approach may help when employees move requests between systems or repeatedly start multi-step processes. An agent can receive a request in natural language, while the workflow carries out business rules that the organization has defined.
Before a trial, clarify:
- Scope of access: Which workflows can the agent call, and which input fields can it provide? Limit the service role to the required state machines and operations.
- Human approval: Financial transactions, customer-data changes and hard-to-reverse actions may need an appropriate confirmation step.
- Exceptions and retries: Define how to handle missing data, failures partway through and duplicate requests so an action is not repeated unintentionally.
- Traceability: Record the input, result, approvals and status of each step.
An agent can interpret a request or choose when to invoke a tool; that does not make its output inherently correct. Business validation and execution permissions still need their own controls.
Start small and measure the outcome
Choose a frequent process with clear inputs and limited risk. Compare processing time, manual intervention, error rates and cost per completed case with the current approach. Expand only after operations staff have confirmed both the results and the exception-handling process.
